The Men Inside is an original theatrical production and visual art experience that centers the emotional lives of Black men. Combining live storytelling and curated artwork, the project builds empathy and understanding by amplifying voices, stories, and lived experiences of real Black men.
First staged in 2022 alongside the Smithsonian Institution’s national exhibition honoring Black men, the production highlighted real stories of Charlotte-based Black men who lead as fathers, mentors, educators, and changemakers. In 2024, the production returned to the stage with new stories and introduced the Mini-Museum, a walk-through exhibition featuring original works by Charlotte artists exploring the same themes. The addition was deeply impactful and will remain a key part of future stagings.
The 2026 iteration will feature even more powerful narratives and artworks. In a time when positive, emotionally rich portrayals of Black men are still rare, The Men Inside offers space for connection, healing, and truth.
